These Cold Winters

These cold winters freeze
more than just the ground.
The poor, the old,
Huddle together and curse
the price of fuel,
Desperate for whatever warmth
a blanket can give.

These cold winters freeze
more than just the ground.
The homeless,
Clad in tattered rags,
Shiver between layers of
cardboard, clutch at empty
bowls of soup.

These cold winters freeze
more than just the ground.
They freeze the hearts of men –
Who outlaw begging,
Who close soup kitchens,
Who slash benefits,
Who do not care.
