The Evacuees

Heated metal shards follow
the left, the right,
Hardened soles carrying away
souls hardened by blood,

Struggling the road taken
the generations before,
With the same baggage from
the same burning homes,

Over plains, through marshes
and trees, broken dreams
of safety in the east,
Behind the rivers and the peaks,

Marching to the world
no longer there.
