Evening’s Gift

No sweat nor tears could
bring back that endless hill,
Drowned as it was in
sunlight and shade and heat.

Afternoon sadness dragged
on Shabbes, quenched by
warming cool and cooling warmth
resting on stone of sand.

Evening’s gift promised and
delivered, settling glow of
tired eyes, beautiful dreams
reflected on eager face.

Night arrived in flashing window
that passed empty silence,
Meditating on the canvas
pulled from pillar to post.

No sweat nor tears could
bring back that endless hill,
Drowned as it was in
sunlight and shade and heat.
