Darkening Skies

Candles, waving in the breeze,
Count raindrops as they strike.
Wax spits with derision on the
darkening skies that hold court.

Rocks gather up the warmth
from wood, cackling, hissing,
Resting in a frame, metal
rounded on street corner.

Messages balance against walls,
Silent howls, shivering light,
Casting heroic shadows from
tired background coming forth.

Night follows day without promise.
Wrapped hands clench and
hold on, waiting for peace,
For the hope of a dawn.

Candles, waving in the breeze,
Count raindrops as they strike.
Wax spits with derision on the
darkening skies that hold court.
