Aches and Pains

Dark alley, in dead of night.
The cold air chokes back
words that want to escape.

Trapped, every thought screams
in the silence of pain, and
dread of the aches to come.

And how they aches, they will come.
With the flash of a face in a crowd.
At night, alone, and empty.

And how the aches, they remain.
In a kiss. With innocent gesture.
Captured in deep, mountainous eyes.

These moments that refuse to flee,
after they are long gone,
vampire-like, feeding on life.

And the aches, how they return,
On vicious tongues, careless
as they encouragably spit –

And the aches, how they return,
On callous hands that
unthinkingly act, again, as before –

And the aches, how they return,
On fawning voice with apologies
that present the back of a hand –

Trapped, every thought screams
in the silence of pain,
howling through empty breath,

Dreading the aches to come.
