On the Volga Shore

Infinite white, spread across frozen plain,
carved in two by a river and fire.

Dark lines cover the land as it is seen
from the sky, tightly packed, bleeding red.

From between crumbling walls a song
drifts eerie above the building’s remains,

hiding the noise beneath with the rats,
calming the air as it tears with howls.

Violent cold fell upon city streets
just as men do on a cooked meal.

Formerly flowing water slows to a crawl
and is swallowed in blocks of ice.

Bricks crumble and fall, exhausted,
surrounded by winter’s deep rage.

Infinite white. Spread across frozen plain.
On river’s banks, dark wings crashed.
