Beneath Sheets of Paper Snow

To remember those days of concrete grey
hidden beneath sheets of paper snow.
Cold breath carried in foreign air
from lips with trapped voice and fearful love.

Fingers shivered in the winter winds,
lonely like the tree’s naked branches,
leaves having fled only to return
for the warmth of spring’s rains.

Summer’s earnest yearning had passed with the fall.
Anxious change settled on the floor,
marshy ground shifting beneath feet
unsettled and hunting for their balance.

To remember those days of concrete grey
hidden beneath sheets of paper snow,
when each frigid touch masked
pale insecurity with clouds of breath.
