A Shattered Peace of Summer

I have watched as the night
filled with the rage of the day,
echoes from the desert sun
as it howled and snapped –

returned to the darkness where
cries rang out like shots,
smothered by a cold air
that steals breath with the breeze.

Black sky waved like a flag,
punctured by shards of light,
desperate and hope smeared
across the whistle of the wind.

And then morning. Morning came
to settle the dust, dew falling
as tears to the earth, to clean
the stains from the street.

I have watched as the night
filled with the rage of the day,
a shattered peace of summer
that broke as the sun fell.
