Waiting

I wait by my phone for a flash
of light on its dead screen.
Tired eyes flicker left and right
beneath the dim covers of a bed
that yearns for less, and more.

Silence, or distant songs. Nothing
moves the still air of this room;
not the lone iambic pulse, not the
lightbulbs that burned out long ago.
Just silence, and distant songs.

I look again, quick left to right.
Still no sign of life against the dark.
Minutes pass by with a yes and no,
unanswered questions, and stern rule.
Tired eyes flicker like the night.

I wait by my phone for a flash
of light on its dead screen.
The still air carries silence
as the night flickers and drags.
Distant songs echo on a cold wall.
