On Uncertain Shores

Gulls howl in the distance
between collapsing waves.
Above them, clouds look on
beyond the horizon’s sadness.

The narrow sea heaves its waters
up across the stones to my feet,
trapped by the shore and
the endless line in all directions.

Lonely voices scatter in the wind
as it spits salt in my face.
Hopeful sun struggles through
the dark that cramps the sky.

Gulls howl in the distance
between collapsing waves.
Waters twist, and turn, and churn
before falling on uncertain shores.
