June 22nd

The darkness of the woods
rustled like the night,
waiting for morning’s sun
and engine’s roar.

First light touched earth
with echoes of Jericho,
and columns of fire
that burnt the trees,

followed by black metal
and relentless surge,
scarring the landscape
with churning tracks.

Soon inferno spread and
swallowed towns whole,
trails of dark flame
that consumed, and consumed.

Blood flowed at river banks
and stubbornly clung to dirt,
holding lines that crawled
with twists and turns.

Bitter marshes tugged at feet
that fled a siren’s howl.
The boggy ground pulled in
all those who fell.

Blood, steel, and fire met
at a nameless pit,
burying still warm bodies
under cruel ash of war.

The darkness of the woods
rustled like the night,
waiting for morning’s sun
for new dawn, for no more.
