Night closes in around the camp
as electricity fails and air cools,
blankets and communal fires
being all that remains of warmth.
Shivering stars hide lights in the sky,
ominous signs that the children miss
as they search for faces above;
their parents turn to the hope of prayer.
Moon bursts from the shadow of the sun,
and black space looms heavy
with fire that threatens to fall.
Night closes in like prison bars,
the open air and shivering stars,
trapping the echoes of fear.
