Summer’s Close

Between the gaps of sunshine
I search the sky for your echo.

There in summer’s close solitude
lengthens with the clouds.

My absent-minded smile
reflects remaining warmth.

Love is distant, like the hills
that obscure horizon’s view.

Between the gaps of sunshine
I search the sky for your echo,

songs from the birds’ perches
that wave like handkerchiefs.

The hour of departure has come
as the sun falls and slows.
