The Last Mass

The pulpit falls silent as
Mass draws to a close
and gathered congregation
reflects on their prayers.

Sudden, still air is broken
by a screech of tires,
a shot, or maybe two,
and a rush of bright red.

Amid panicked cries
a heart stops and s
cassock stains with the
wet colour of its lining.

The pulpit fell silent as
war came to the churches,
and gathered congregation
signed up to fight.
