Thunder creeps over the dirt until
it falls on the men hiding below.
Dark skies shiver and flash white
with hellish roar, and shrapnel fear.
Rain and earth swallow the dead
and drown the living alike.
Scarred fields turn a thick black,
pestilent, shredded with steel.
The ever-willing soldiers do not dare
question why beneath the shells.
It is but theirs to do and die
and be forgotten when war comes again.
