A World Outside

Songs carry over traffic noise
and fumes that choke the air.
Distant rhythms pull feet along
to their next obligation.

Between the waiting lights,
red and green, I light a cigarette
and turn away from the thick grey
that obfuscates the heights.

Beneath the bright headphones
passing cars go unheard.
A world outside fades into
a sound crafted with care.
